King Juan Fransesco
by: Larry Dusseault

Was a noble and Just King
tall and splendid.
King Juan Fransesco had dark and wavy hair
and loved to sing with his beautiful voice.
His skin was dark and looked wonderful in the
flow of his faded white suit as
he moved carefully in his realm.
King Juan Fransesco limped a little as
his one leg was a little smaller than the other
though his shoes
blessed as it would seem
were of a soft brown leather
and fit him so very well.
King Juan Fransesco was not a King of many things
or of any land and rarely any money
but King Juan Fransesco had many many friends.
Some of his friends were rich and famous
some were ordinary folk
some were birds and other creatures he like to talk to.
Mostly he was known for the bean soup
he helped to make with his friends at the shelter down by the harbor.
It was a far better place than the old cardboard box
he had lived in
behind the parking garage down town
where too many “thieves and crazy" people tried
to take his few possessions
and
none would call him by his proper name.
King Juan Fransesco was King of all he could see
which was very little for he was nearly blind
but he had the most delicate nose
and could tell the difference between
a new rose and an old one
or a good piece of meat from a spoiled one.
King Juan Fransesco
a kind and gentle man
who at one time had all his teeth
now had only two or three
but he could whistle the most marvelous tunes
Royal tunes they were
for he said so.

Most of all King Juan Fransesco was a happy man
and he loved every day
and every day he gave some of that love away
sometimes to his friends
sometimes at the corner of the street
where he could be seen yelling and waving at the rush hour
traffic

sometimes to a lonely tired dog
behind a big fence in the alley
a long forgotten Christmas present of
some long ago child
who now was uptown with no time for the dog
and no time for the likes of King Juan Fransesco

who
with an open heart
loved them both equally
whistling sunshine
on his way to a dumpster buffet.
